DANA CRASH INQUEST: How We Received Remains of Crash Victims – Obafunwa

Professor John Obafunwa, a consultant forensic pathologist and Chief Medical Examiner of Lagos State, yesterday, told  a Lagos Coroner Court that some remains of the victims of the Dana Air crash were burnt beyond recognition.
Obafunwa, who also is Vice-Chancellor, Lagos  State University, told the court that several of the bodies only “contained bone fragments while some had body parts” which were salvaged in pieces by the rescue team who brought them to the hospitals for autopsy.

The Coroner was put up sequel to petitions from some lawyers for inquest into the June 3 Dana air crash in Iju, Lagos.

The pathologist, who bemoaned the cost and time for carrying out DNA test abroad, said it was time the country had a functional DNA centre.

He added that the result of DNA tests on the bodies of some of the victims would arrive the country next week, to enable their families bury their remains.
