13 Egyptian Soldiers Killed In Attack On Army Checkpoint

At least 13 Egyptian solders were killed and 10 others wounded Sunday when masked men attacked an army checkpoint in Rafah, near the border with Gaza, a North Sinai security official said.
The assault occurred shortly after sunset when the assailants attacked the post with semi-automatic weapons and hand grenades, said Gen. Ahmed Bakr, head of North Sinai security.

The Israel Defense Forces blamed terrorists associated with the Global Jihad group for the violence.

"Terrorists in the Sinai region captured an Egyptian military post ... killed over ten Egyptian soldiers and took over two armored personnel carriers," IDF said in a statement.

One of the carriers exploded at the border, while the other was attacked as it was entering Israeli territory, it said.

A gunbattle between the attackers and armed forces was ongoing Sunday night, Bakr said. More military forces have been deployed to assist.
