Best Sex Positions For Getting Pregnant

Couples trying to conceive the natural way are willing to do whatever it takes to facilitate that crucial one-in-a-million meeting between sperm and egg. And from old wives to new age healers, there’s usually someone on hand to tell them the best way to get the job done – from what to eat, to when to have sex to the best sex positions for getting pregnant.

Doctors have looked at the question from every angle – from the top, from behind, standing up and sitting down. And the result is: there’s no fool-proof position for getting pregnant. There may be, however, some positions and post-coital tactics that are more conducive to conception.

-Missionary position: This reliable standard may actually aid in conception, as it allows the deepest penetration for the man, and thus the closest contact of sperm to the cervix.

Little known fact: the term “missionary position” was coined by human sexuality researcher Alfred Kinsey in 1948, to describe how non-Western societies termed the English-American “man on top” position.

-From behind: Women with a tipped uterus (which can only be diagnosed by a physician) may have better luck conceiving if their partner enters from behind.  Doing so might ensure that sperm are more likely to reach the opening of the cervix, and begin their swim upstream.

-Stay off your feet! Having sex standing up in the shower or sitting on the kitchen table may be hot and spontaneous, but gravity-defying sex doesn’t help sperm along on their journey. Even the woman on top position may not be ideal, as ejaculated sperm may make a swan dive before they reach the fallopian tubes.

Post-nookie positioning

Many women believe that lying on their backs with a pillow under their hips will help sperm travel upstream to the fallopian tubes. Others take the position even farther, by pulling their knees up to their chest and remaining that way for several minutes after sex.

Babycenter.com says that while there is no proof that the pillow-under-the-butt method works, “it can’t hurt” to stay lying down, hips slightly raised with a pillow, for 15 minutes or so post-nookie.

Things hopeful couples should not do: use douche after sex, or use a spermicidal lubricant during intercourse. Even non-spermicidal lubricants contain ingredients that can waylay the hardiest of sperm; currently only one product, ConceivEase, has been proven to have no harmful effects on sperm.

Also, and we hate to say this, oral sex is a no-no during fertile periods, as saliva can slow sperm down on their heroic journey.

Was it good for you?

Some fertility websites and blogs claim that if a woman has an orgasm after her partner ejaculates, she may increase her chances of conceiving. This is because the uterine contractions that occur during orgasm may push sperm closer to the fallopian tubes. While no hard research supports this, really, who can argue with an orgasm?

It’s all in the timing

More important than looking for the best sex positions for getting pregnant (though it can’t hurt to try them all out) is the time of the month that couples copulate.

A woman is fertile for a few days each month – usually somewhere between 11 and 18 days after the first day of her menstrual period. So having sex every other day during this window of opportunity is crucial to a couple’s chances of conceiving. Sex every day during the fertile period is too much, as the guy needs a chance to recharge his sperm count.

Women can monitor their most fertile days with a variety of methods, including taking their basal body temperature, checking cervical mucus consistency, or by using an ovulation test or monitor. These devices range from the simplest “pee stick” test to expensive digital devices, all of which are designed to pinpoint when a woman ovulates.

Couples who have all systems go – meaning no known fertility problems – still have only a 25% percent chance of getting pregnant during the woman’s fertile period.
