WAEC Sanctions Candidates Involved in Exam Malpractice

The National President, All Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, Hajiya Fatima Abdulrahman, said 101,398 candidates out of the total number of 1,695,872 candidates who sat for the May/June 2012 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination in Nigeria were considered to have been involved in malpractice.

She made this known to journalists at the end of the 54th Meeting of the Nigeria Examinations Committee of the West African Examinations Council on Thursday in Lagos.

She disclosed that names of the candidates and schools involved in examination malpractice would be available on WAEC website in about two weeks time.
Abdulrahman said, “The committee has approved that appropriate sanctions as prescribed by the rules and regulations governing the conduct of the examination be applied.

“The committee has approved that the entire results of candidates involved in proven cases, which attract cancellation of entire results be cancelled, while results, in proven cases, which attract cancellation of subject results be similarly cancelled. In addition, some candidates will also suffer other sanctions such as barring them from sitting for the council’s examinations for certain number of years,” she said.

Abdulrahman said that the decisions of the committee would be implemented without delay.

The Head of National Office, Mr. Charles Eguridu, also said that the council would implement stringent measures that would make exam malpractice difficult for candidates.

Eguridu said one of such stringent measures would be the amendment version of the regulation guiding use of mobile phones.

He said, “Examination malpractice has made things difficult for the council. We plan to introduce biometric feature in the registration process for candidates. Aside this, we would also update the features of our certificate so that it would be almost impossible to duplicate.”
