Will Smith’s Controversial Style of Parenting
Will Smith and his
wife Jada Pinkett Smith strive to treat their children like independent adults,
according to a new interview.
The Smith's have
found themselves in the news more often recently due to their more relaxed
nature of parenting. The Hollywood couple
wants to keep their kids grounded but also raise them to have respect and
confidence for themselves, Will told Haute Living.
The pair parent
14-year-old Jaden and 12-year-old Willow.
"My style of
parenting is very similar to that of my parents, minus the concept of
ownership. I think that, specifically in African American households, the idea
coming out of slavery, there's a concept of your children being property and
that was a major part that Jada and I released with our kids," Smith said.
"We respect our children the way we would respect any other person. Things
like cleaning up their room. You would never tell a full-grown adult to clean
their room, so we don't tell our kids to clean their rooms."
Instead the After
Earth star and his wife tell their children that their room is a space they are
borrowing from their parents. Just like you would clean a car you borrow from a
friend, they should clean their rooms.
Smith also
reiterates the fact that his son Jaden, who costars with his father in After
Earth, is not looking to be emancipated. The rumor started from a joke he made
in an interview, but the father of two assures fans that it is untrue.
"He is
definitely not going anywhere; he is so scared of being out on his own,"
Smith states.
However, with the
way the Smiths are raising their children, it sounds like Jaden will be more
than capable of taking care of himself when the time comes.
