At the tender age of four, he fell in love with the art of drawing on scraps of papers using pens but little did he know that this irresistible urge to draw would bring him fame, wealth and more importantly, a professional sense of fulfillment.
Today, Olatunde Alade Vincent popularly known as ‘Alvince’ in fashion circles has clothed celebrities both within and outside the country.
What began over twenty years ago as a hobby recently brought him face to face with American based R n B singer and songwriter, Lloyd (who has about 20 tattoos including the picture of his father) who insisted on being clothed by one of Nigeria’s youngest fashion designers, Alvince.
His voracious appetite for clothing top Nigerian celebrities has seen him clothing the likes of D’Banj (throughout 2007 and 2008), Okocha, Ade Bakare (Nigerian fashion designer based in the UK), Don Jazzy, John Fashanu, Obayuwana, Shuaibu Amodu, Wande Cole, Cecil Almond, Tee A, AY and host of others. “I made D’banj’s first and biggest award of all time; the MTV Base Award, which was held in Germany in 2007. I designed the ‘green white green fabric he wore for that event. For the iHiHHip Hop World Awards (HHWA) in 2008, I designed the golden shirt he won the award with,” he said
In a chat with SimplySamad, Alvince spoke on his love for drawing, dancing, modeling, acrobatics and his dream of clothing soccer stars like David Beckam and C. Ronaldo. However, contrary to expectations, he revealed that despite his relationship with the opposite sex, he has never broken a woman’s heart before.
Meet Alvince
My names are Olatunde Alade Vincent. I got my name from Alade and Vincent. I’m half Lagos, half Delta. My dad’s from Lagos while my mum’s from Kwale in Delta. I attended Baptist Primary School, Command Children’s School and finished at Obele Odo Primary School, Itire. I left in 1996/1997. I had my primary education at St. Finbar’s College, Akoka in Lagos. I was a pure science student. I was admitted into Lagos State University (LASU) to study medicine but I didn’t finish because I had problems in school.
How fashion designing began
I thought of how I could keep my sketching skills alive. I remember that I represented my school in a drawing competition when I was in primary 5 and I came 2nd in Lagos State. I’ve been drawing since I’ve been 4 years old and I have a picture to prove it and I’ve always been drawing with pens even till date. As far as I’m concerned, in arts, there’s no room for mistakes. Even if there’s a mistake, it becomes a design and that’s the mark of a good artiste. I actually take my time to draw all my designs. In 2007, I went in for Ade Bakare’s Young Designers’ Competition. He’s a Nigerian designer based in London. He came to the country and had the competition. Thousands contested all over Nigeria and ten of us got to finals. Out of that ten, I came out 4th. It really pained me that I didn’t win that competition because if I had won, it would have given me a massive leverage. I was so angry. We applied with our drawings so were scored based on that. However, at the finals, we were asked to produce those drawings and that was where I flopped. I really tried my best. To God be the glory because today, if you talk of the youngest designer in Lagos State, my name rings a very loud bell. I’ve clothed a whole lot of celebrities. I’ve clothed top artistes and celebrities in Nigeria. Two weeks ago, Lloyd, the American hip hop act was in the country and I clothed him. He was begging me for my shirt. I’ve clothed a whole lot of artistes and after that; there has been no looking back.

I’ve clothed Don Jazzy. I’ve clothed Obayuwana. He’s the owner of Polo wrist watches in Nigeria. I’ve clothed Okocha. I’ve clothed the present coach of the Super Eagles, Shuaibu Amodu. I’ve clothed John Fashanu. I’ve clothed Ade Bakare himself. It was a long tunic. I‘ve clothed Mr. Kool, the R n B artiste. I’ve clothed Timi, the winner of West African Idols. I’ve clothed Eric. I’ve clothed Bobby AK. I’ve clothed Tee A, the comedian. I’ve clothed AY. I’ve clothed Cecil Almond, the manager of Light and Entertainment and so many other top Nigerian celebrities. Genevieve and I are talking at the moment. She’s having her show very soon.
My Dream
I’m looking forward to making clothes for Beckam, C. Ronaldo and others. I want to have a boutique in Hollywood. At the moment, the least I charge for a shirt if N10, 000 and it takes me a week to make a shirt. I’m trying to make a mark as the youngest international fashion designer from Africa. If you want to go on red carpet and you want to look smashing, it’s my job to dress you right for the occasion. It’s not as if we’ve not had young designers like me but we’re talking about designers who have clothed celebrities. I might not be making a whole lot of money from them at the moment but the fact that I have clothed them will have a huge impact on my profile. Look at Lloyd for instance. Which young designer has clothed Lloyd? I never knew he was in the house. He just saw me when I came to take a bow and told Titi of Sound City that he wants a shirt from me. Frank Edohor was waiting for him to come and sing for the ladies on stage but he came after me instead. He followed me backstage and made his intentions known. I make shirts. I make G-strings, gowns and anything beautiful and I’ve never been to a fashion school in my life. Watch out for the best of Alvince because when I get to UK or New York, do two or three courses in fashion designing and come back to the country, I’ll be smoking hot. I’ve not been to a fashion school yet and celebrities love what I do. What happens when I brush up my act? My clothing line is called Alvince.
Daughters of Eve
I’m not married. I try my best to cope because I don’t joke with ladies. I respect them because they rule and they have control. I don’t have a girlfriend. I won’t say I’m too busy. I’ll just say I haven’t found her. I just can’t bring myself to break a girl’s heart. I’ve never done it before I my life. I have never done it before I respect women’s feelings. I try to respect people’s feelings; even guys. As for the bold ones, we all have them but one has to be very careful. Some of them try tom nail you against the wall and this category of chics, all you have to do is show them the nails and the hammer.
Designers are gay
Yeah. That’s the consensus but I’m very straight. I meet them from time to time but I take them for who they are. I don’t discriminate against them because you never can tell whose help you’re going to need while climbing up the ladder of success. Funny enough, gays and bisexuals rule the world. They have a lot of influence and I don’t discriminate against them in any way. They usually don’t go too far with me and if they do, I’ll simply tell them I ain’t the type but that doesn’t mean we can’t be friends.
My face and work gets me out of trouble
Yeah! My visage and work gets me out of trouble. Policemen don’t harass me? They usually laugh with me when they see me because of my peculiar hairstyle. I’m an extrovert and that really helps because when I merge that with my looks, I just slide through situations that would otherwise have proven problematic. Sometimes, they even take me for a foreigner. I’ve got pink lips and I don’t smoke. I’ve been growing my hair for three straight years now and I’m aiming for ten.
My parents
They’re happy because relatives and friends keep telling them they saw me here and there and that makes them very proud to have me. They see me on bill boards, TV and so on they’re so glad. My mum knows I’m hard-working and she likes me a lot. Sometimes, she even gets my fabric for me. She goes out of her way to go to the market to get me clothes. Sometimes, she jokes that she’s going to collect her money back. My dad is a businessman and so is my mum.
Marriage
Nope. Not now and my mother has never pestered me to go and get a wife. I’m still young and I’m not thinking of marriage at the moment. I’m in my mid 20s.
Multi-talented
I personally feel that I’m full of talent. I dance. I draw. I like creative things and I’m vast. I do a lot of things with ease. I also dance and do acrobatics. I finally detached from LASU in 2004. I’ve always been into entertainment but before I left LASU, it was always subdued. When I left school, I was dancing for Basketmouth at shows. I was doing a lot of Michael Jackson then. I was doing Thriller, Billy Jean, Smooth Criminal and others. One thing about me is that I love money that I have to sweat for. I don’t like the kind of money that just comes with ease. No! I like to sweat for every kobo I earn. I love hustling and I love to create mark in all that I do. I’ve also danced for Princess the comedian. In 2006, I got into modeling. I did a couple of advert. I did Indomie adverts. I was the guy they were braiding hair for in that one with the song: ‘To me-to you, it’s…’ I did the present billboard for the Malta Guiness Street Dance. I’ve not seen it in Lagos but it’s in Benin. I’ve done MTN, Swan Spring Water. I’ve done Eko Bank.
Smoking
My dad smokes but I’ve never tried it before. I just don’t like the idea of puffing smoke like a dragon.
Likes
I love video games but I’m not really crazy about movies except there’s too much hype about it. For example, if I hear about spider man ten where the guy has 10 packs and fell from heaven or something like that. I love smelling nice but I’m not perfume crazy.
