Precisely a week to Christmas (Sunday December 18, 2011), alumni of Maryland Comprehensive High School in Ikeja converged at Cafeteria Royal situated along Oba Akran Road in Ikeja, Lagos for an event that would not be forgotten in a hurry.

While it was not hard to guess why old graduates of the school’s 1999/2000 graduating set decided to come together with plenty to eat, drink and dance to, the event took an interesting twist with the presence of some of Nigeria’s rising entertainment figures.
Some of those who added a large dose of colour and spark to the event were popular Nollywood actress who doubles as Master of Ceremony, Doris Simeon (who incidentally also happened to be an alumni as well), rising rapper, Mi Fliss, Nigeria’s prominent DJ Charlie Shee, Ifan as well as other artistes.
While the alumni and other guests simply absorbed the tide of contemporary beats and music from DJ Charlie Shee’s magic fingers, Doris Ademinokan remained a visible point of excitement for many others.
After the cake was collectively cut by the old students, they all took to the dance floor and danced into the heart of the night.
In a chat with Simply Samad, Doris Ademinokan expressed her excitement at being able to be part of the event adding that prior to the event, she had assured the Coordinator, Marylanders United, Theophilus Akhimie that she would do everything within her power to be at the event.
Speaking on the reunion, she said: “I really commend him. He did a very good job. It is a very good start because I narrowly missed the first one that was held at Maryland Comprehensive High School earlier this year. It is a very good way of networking and we all need each other. The world is such a small place. It is something I’m looking forward to this every year because I had been longing to see my old school mates for a very long time and this helped me fulfill it.”
Towards the end of the event, Akhimie noted that he felt complete with being able to finally hold the event. “It makes me feel complete but you know human nature; I feel we can do more. Nonetheless, this is a good stepping stone. We have achieved our purpose and we can build on that.”
He also expressed unreserved appreciation to Nollywood actress, Doris Simeon for being able to attend the event. Her presence carried a lot of weight and we actually felt it by the way people were able to interact with her. She played her part very well knowing fully well that her status as a celebrity would bring a lot of colour to the event. Going by her humble nature, people were able to interact with her with ease as a mate and as a celebrity. Our plan is for an annual event and perhaps to make it bigger. This however, remains a stepping stone with more things to come.”
