N97/litre: How will Nigerians fare?

N97/litre game plan
By Samod Biobaku

After a week-long strike action against President Jonathan’s removal of oil subsidy, millions of Nigerians across the world had their hearts broken and their hopes suddenly dashed when the NLC shockingly called off the strike and accepted the president’s N97/litre selling price for fuel.

We are all aware of the drama that ensued during the strike and how Nigerians stood resolute in the demand for a return of oil subsidy as well as a reversion of fuel back to its original N65/litre selling price but the question now is, how will Nigerians fare with the new N97/litre selling price for fuel.
From the very start, Mr. President made it clear that he would not back down and remained as adamant as the masses on his removal of subsidy on oil.
I always knew that at the very end, we would inevitably have another Judas and in this case, the NLC and TUC wear the garb.
However, at this point, I would want us to sit tight and see what happens to Nigeria after 6 months. Let us see if truly the money realised from the removal of subsidy would genuinely be spent on transforming Nigeria into a better state just as Jonathan promised in the beginning of this subsidy drama - though I doubt that a nation that has flourished in the waters of corruption for decades can suddenly understand its responsibilities and wake up to it.
Meanwhile, at least Jonathan will withdraw his goons off the streets and let us resume the joke we call DEMOCRACY.
In the coming months, we shall all witness the true implication and effect of the removal of oil subsidy in every facet of our lives; from the cost of living down to every other item that used to be affordable in the past.
May the Lord continue to watch over us and protect us from ‘Vampires in beautiful attire.’
