A Nigerian's Eulogy to Goldie

We received this eulogy to late singer, Goldie from an entrepreneur in the entertainment business and found it interesting enough to share with you.

"GOLDEN GOLDIE. I am not usually this emotional really and I am not a "crowd follower" if you get what I mean. My names are Olaniyi Tompson Tabi - the CEO, Black Image, the theatre cum dance company most of you know and most don't know too. In 2001, we started the Celebrity Theatre initiative; a situation where we use celebrities and busy executives to act on our stage.

Our list is quite long but we won't bore you with it. For the records we've had people like Chief Dele Momodu, Senator Tokunboh Afikuyomi, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Ruggedman, Kenny Ogungbe, Dayo Adeneye, Kunle Afolayan, Buky Wright, Toks Modupe, Wunmi Obey, Funmi Iyanda...the list still goes on. But then, we had Susan Bimpe Harvey nee Filani on stage too. Where?

At the shrine. It was a chance meeting with her through Denrele who equally graced our stage in times past. My partner, Paul met her for the first time at her home situated at Park View, Ikoyi in Lagos. It was a dramatic scene. Early that morning, she was having ogi and akara and invited Paul to eat with her. He obliged and Goldie was elated to have someone share her breakfast with her, thus began a fruitful relationship between Black Image and Goldie.

Work started in earnest with her for the stage production. She made several trips to our rehearsals ground on the mainland without a fuss and there was no air around this babe at all. She was down to earth and ready to learn all the dance steps.

She was a perfectionist to the core and even had to invite the dance director to her home for rehearsals. She came across to me as being gentle, calm and very respectful. She was the type of girl you could take home to mama as a wife. We lost touch after the production but we touched base with her once in a while. She created an impression and I don't care what people say about her today. Goldie comes to us as being 'real.' At the Shrine, she endured all d hiccups of our theatrical experience; always smiling. She did not allow us give her any special treatment. The last time I saw her was at the NMVA 2012. Adieu Goldie Black Image mourns you.”
