Quote of the Week - Segun Arinze [+Ayo Alao Store special]

“Could you believe that charms, juju and eggs were freely used by the actors and actresses, made up of the contestants and delegates...? There was a free for all. Everyone took to their heels. I have never seen anything like that in my life. The election was to be a family affair. We are not a political party but rather an association of professions... To say I was disappointed is just putting it mildly.”

Courtois wants Cech to stay at Chelsea

LONDON - Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois wants Petr Cech to remain at the club, having apparently supplanted him in coach Jose Mourinho's goalkeeping hierarchy.

Courtois's return from a three-year loan at Atletico Madrid sparked conjecture about which goalkeeper Mourinho would select as his number one, and it was the 22-year old Belgian who started in Monday's 3-1 win at Burnley.

There is now speculation that 32-year-old Cech, who joined Chelsea 10 years ago, may seek to leave Stamford Bridge, but Courtois hopes to benefit from the Czech international's experience.

"I want him to stay. Even if he doesn't play, he can be a lot of help to me in training," Courtois said, in comments published by several British media outlets on Wednesday.

"I can still learn from him because he has a lot of experience. He can give me good tips about the Premier League, things I might not know at the start.

"He is nice to me. We are training very well and he is still proving he is a great goalkeeper.

"For the team it is better for us to have two good goalkeepers. I don't have a problem if he stays. Hopefully I can play well and stay in the team."

Mourinho has declared that he wants Cech to stay and fight for his place.

Liverpool Agree to Fee for Mario Balotelli

He's coming back. Mario Balotelli is on the verge of returning to the Premier League.

The BBC's Ben Smith reports Liverpool and AC Milan have agreed to a £16 million fee for the 24-year-old striker.

Though Liverpool and Balotelli have yet to agree to personal terms, that matter is expected to be sorted out in the coming days.

AC Milan released a statement on their website that indicated Balotelli's time with the club was over.

"Mario Balotelli left Milanello's sporting centre at 13:30 local time, after saying goodbye to his team-mates," it read.

"Before leaving the premises, the striker has said goodbye to members of Milan's press office."

Balotelli replaces Luis Suarez, who left Liverpool for Barcelona this summer.

If contract matters are sorted in time, Balotelli could feature for Liverpool when they travel to Etihad Stadium for their match against his former club, Manchester City, on Monday.

Angel di Maria wants a transfer, rejected offer from Real Madrid

Although Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos reportedly urged Real Madrid owner Florentino Perez to keep Angel di Maria, it appears that the Argentine winger is looking to leave the Santiago Bernabéu.

Speaking ahead of Friday's second leg of the Supercopa de España, manager Carlo Ancelotti admitted on Thursday that Di Maria has told Real Madrid that he wants to leave and has even rejected the offer of a new contract.

"Di Maria asked to go in the summer and has rejected an offer from the club," Ancelotti said. "The player has to look for a solution. If when the market closes he's still here, he will work with us like last season and there will be no problem.

"He's a Real Madrid player and until 31 August, as I've already said, anything can happen.

"I'm surprised to read that there seems to be some disagreement [about Di Maria] between the club and me. There's no disagreement and we both think the same."

Manchester United have been linked with Di Maria throughout the summer and are reportedly willing to spend up to £100 million on the transfer fee and wages to bring him to Old Trafford

Nigerian Economy May Lose $3.5bn to Ebola — Rewane

The nation may lose $3.5bn to the Ebola epidemic by December this year, if nothing is done to contain the spread of the deadly disease.

The Chief Executive Officer, Financial Derivatives Company Limited, Mr. Bismarck Rewane, who stated this in the firm’s latest report on Friday, said the fear of the disease had affected economic activities significantly.

According to him, the sectors of the economy mostly affected by the fear of the disease are aviation, tourism and hospitality, trade, medical and agriculture.

He added, “Analysing these sectors’ contribution to the Gross Domestic Product shows that Nigeria may lose about $2bn in the first quarter of the outbreak. The chance of the outbreak going into a second quarter is very slim; which could extend the loss to $3.5bn.”

The Boko Haram insurgency had been the headline news in Nigeria until July 25 when it was confirmed that Ebola was imported into the country.

Since then, fear, panic, disbelief and frustration have set in as economic, particularly in Lagos, have gradually slowed down. Global rating agency, Moody’s, has announced that the outbreak of Ebola in Nigeria can lead to serious disruptions in some sectors of the economy with negative financial consequences.

The World Health Organisation has also reported that the Ebola crisis is vastly underestimated as the reported cases and deaths do not reflect the scale of the crisis.

About 1,069 persons have died in the affected countries, out of which three are Nigerians and 198 other persons are currently under quarantine in the country.

That we may not forget - Stella Adadevoh and Justina Ejelonu

There's a statue in Yaba, Lagos, of a man, whom many in Nigeria have forgotten. His family never have. And now, we all have a chance to remember him, and in a way, to honour him. He is the man on our one Naira coin.

Herbert Olayinka Samuel Heelas Badmus Macaulay, had a daughter, Sarah Idowu Abigail, who would get married and give birth to a son, Babatunde Kwaku Adadevoh. Babatunde would grow up to become a doctor, and have kids of his own.  One of these children, Stella Ameyo, became, like her father, a doctor.

She would go on to work at a hospital in Obalende, Lagos, First Consultant Hospital, not very far from where her famous ancestor was once imprisoned by the British. It was to be at that that place of work that  Stella Ameyo was to perform an act that would save the lives of possibly hundreds of thousands, and sacrifice her own in return.

On July 20, 2014, a patient was wheeled in from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Patrick Sawyer, the patient, had shown signs of high fever during his flight from Monrovia, and was taken straight from the airport to the hospital. By the next day, his condition had deteriorated, and he was immediately placed under observation, while his blood sample was taken, and sent for tests. That same day, Mr. Sawyer insisted, with the help of officials of the Liberian Embassy, on being discharged. Stella Ameyo, as supervising doctor, stood her ground that he should not leave the hospital. It was at that point, while reinserting his needles, that she came in contact with him, and in effect signed her own death warrant. One of her junior colleagues, Justina Obi Ejelonu, who had the day before when Sawyer was brought in, helped in checking him, also assisted in placing him back in care. Like Stella Ameyo Adadevoh, Justina Obi Ejelonu, has passed away.

There is no other word to describe the actions of both women, and indeed their entire facility. In preventing the escape of this patient who had insisted on leaving, in his condition, for Calabar, 750 kilometres away, both women saved countless lives. What if Mr. Sawyer had decided that the best way to go to Calabar was to go to Jibowu and take a bus? Even if he'd chosen to go by air, which would have made his fellow passengers that much easier to trace, the potential damage is incalculable.

The most tragic part of the passing of both women is that they cannot even be buried decently, and with all the respect that their sacrifice demands. The very bug that cut them down is so virulent, so unforgiving, that even that honour, will be deprived them.

The sacrifice that Dr. Adadevoh and Nurse Ejelonu have made is the highest form of sacrifice that any man, or woman, can make for his, or her, fellow human being. It is said that there is no greater love than to lay down your life for your friend. Both women, and their colleague, put their lives on the line for 170 million of their fellow citizens, many of whom do not even understand the concept of what it means to be a citizen. The very least that Nigeria can do in appreciation, is to honour them. I have a suggestion for such an honour, and not some meaningless title or coin which will soon fall out of use. Nigeria should declare August 19 each year a national holiday, and in the names of both women. That way, some Nigerian child in six decades can ask his parent, "Mummy, who is Stella Ameyo Adadevoh?" And the parent can reply, "That woman saved my life, and the lives of all of us". It is the least we can do. It is the least we should do.

I Will Never Bite Anyone Again, Says Suarez

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez said he has received professional help
after receiving a four-month ban for biting an opponent for the third time in his
career when he clashed with Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

Suarez made his debut for the Catalans in a 6-0 friendly win over Mexican side
Club Leon on Monday, but will not be able to play a competitive game for Barca
until late October after his appeal against the ban was thrown out by the Court
of Arbitration for Sport last week.

“The suspension is what it is and I have to accept it, it is a personal matter but
I have worked with the adequate professionals,” the Uruguayan said at his first
press conference as a Barca player on Tuesday.

“I have tried to forget this game and this situation as well. It is a difficult
moment for me and I would say to all the fans to not worry because I am not
doing that anymore.”

Suarez was believed to have been a long-term target for Barca’s eternal rivals
Real Madrid. However, Barca’s sporting vice-president Jordi Mestre said the
player’s desire to come to Catalonia had allowed the club to negotiate a fee of
81 million euros (£65 million, $109 million) with Liverpool, £10 million less than
the player’s £75 million release clause.

“There were options from other teams, but when the option of Barca became
clear I didn’t have any doubts because it was a dream for me,” added Suarez.
“I still can’t believe it. It is something I have dreamed about but I never
imagined such a beautiful dream would come true.”

Suarez could even make his competitive debut against Madrid should their first
clash of the season be scheduled for Saturday, October 25 or the following day
and he is determined to ensure he is as fit as possible when that game comes
around in case coach Luis Enrique calls on him to start.

“It’s not the same but I had a similar situation last year at Liverpool, I started
to play on September 20. It is a long time but if you keep focused with your
teammates in training it helps.”

Barcelona already have a wealth of talent available in attacking areas with four-time World Player of the Year Lionel Messi and Brazilian star Neymar, meaning
Suarez is likely to be forced into a role on the right side of the attack.

However, he insisted that won’t phase him as he dovetailed with Daniel
Sturridge last year to form a deadly partnership that nearly delivered Liverpool first Premier League title in 24 years.

“I am prepared to play any position in attack. This last year I played on the left
and on the right because Sturridge played as the number nine. I don’t have any
problem playing in any position and adapting myself to what the coach
demands.

“The quality that Leo and Ney have is amazing, they are players you admire.
Yesterday I was watching them in the first half and they make you want to stop
and applaud.”
