‘Right now, we consider girls a distraction’ – Plus One

One guaranteed way that fame manifests itself especially in the Nigerian entertainment industry is through the population of girls who suddenly desire the personalities in question so much that they would willingly do anything to get intimate.Various showbiz personalities have had different tales to tell depending on how they handled the pressure that came with fame. For some it’s a walk in the park and for others, it is a grey chapter they try to wish away. However, for the trio of Henry Ukegbu, Michael Eze and Precious Ukegu who make up the musical group, Plus One, it has been a candid case of hide and seek.In a chat with SimplySamad, the group revealed how they deal with their female fans, their relationship with popular music producer, ID Cabasa as well as their romance with music so far.

MUSIC
We’re not brother. It’s just a coincidence. Music came naturally to us. We were in school together and it was just a matter of time because we were always singing and hanging out together. We used to be very mischievous while in school and that was what it was all about back then. However, after school, some people who had been monitoring our progress all the while encouraged us to form a group and give our songs a new face.We are very versatile. We do R n B, reggae, hip hop and a little of rock.We grew up in the same neighbourhood so after we left school. We came together and decided to start writing songs and decided to take our music to the next level. We started professionally about five years ago. Our area of strength is R n B. We are all good singers individually so we just decided to break the songs down according to our area of strength. Precious takes Soprano so he is the lead singer. Michael sings the alto and I sing tenor. We were done with our album a while ago but we had slight problems at the studio when some things went wrong technically so we had to start all over again and right now, we’re good to go. Our album is almost ready. Just wait for the bang. RELATIONSHIP WITH CABASAWe know ID Cabasa is hot and Cabasa actually sang in our first single, Tickle Me that’s on air now. We featured him. He’s also producing the song. The song is for everybody. It’s a mixture of Hip Hop, R n B and Rock.
CHALLENGES
We’re different people from different backgrounds. Coming together to understand ourselves is not something that can be done in a single day. Despite the fact that we have known each other for a while now, we still cannot understand ourselves a 100%. We have been trying to cope with each other and we’ve been doing very well with that. Finance is another hurdle we have been working on. It’s hard to make anyone put money into our music. Nobody wants to come and pour money into what he/she does not know about. Sponsors are not forthcoming so we’ve had to look inwards to pay for studio fee and record our songs. Right now, we’re into promotions and it’s been tough financially. However, Cabasa has been a blessing to us in this regard. So far, when it comes to women and girls, we understand each other perfectly. We know how to handle them and we know how to give them their space. However, individually, we have our private lives. Right now, we’re not letting women distract us.
PARENTS AND MUSIC
(Henry) had to sweep it under the carpet top avoid complications. I remember a lot of times when I would tell mother that I was going for choir practice, meanwhile, I would be in the studio recording. However, there came a time when I had to lay it bare.As for me (Michael), I mother is a widow so she has always been very supportive. She never told me not to do music neither did she push me into it. She simply told me that if it was what I really wanted, I should go for it.Initially, my parents were reluctant. They wanted me to do the doctor or lawyer thing but at a point, they noticed that I had the talent so they gave me the freedom I needed for my music. NEXT TWO YEARSWe hope to have found our way into the heart of the Nigerian music community. We don’t expect it to be a walk in the park but we’re ready to tackle the challenges as they come.
DREAM COLLABORATION
We would love to work with Justin Timberlake and Aero Smith.
