Paul Okoye, a member of Nigerian music duo, P-Square, according to reports was attacked by gun-wielding robbers, Wednesday evening, May 25, 2011.
The musician was on his way to meet a couple friends at the Victoria Island when he was attacked.
Sources say, Paul who was driving his new BMW X6 with customised registration number ‘Rude Boy’ stopped to assist accident victims on the way and as he returned to his car after the rescue he was approached by two armed men who demanded all his valuables.
Paul narrated that, “I was about leaving when these two guys surfaced from nowhere and demanded for everything I had on me at gun point.”
He added that, “They actually succeeded in taking my phones, money, jewellery and other valuables, but just as they were about collecting my car key, one woman who had noticed what was happening screamed and alerted people at the accident scene. And that was when the gunmen ran away.”
The gunmen, according to Paul, “said they were not going to beat or shoot me, but warned that I must cooperate with them. It was so funny because they said what they wanted what was their own share from P Square’s ‘largesse’.”
The star however was very grateful that nothing untoward happened to him. “I just thank God that they didn’t hurt me.”

Few weeks back, another entertainer, Denrele Edun and his friends were attacked by robbers on their way from a musical video shooting on Victoria Island. Some of the valuables they lost to the robbers include blackberry phones, money and laptops.
Also, popular Yoruba actor, Muyiwa Ademola was last month robbed of his Montero automobile and other valuables by armed robbers.
A few days before Muyiwa was attacked, his friend and business associate, Kazeem Afolayan, CEO of Epsalum Movies also lost his Honda Acura to armed robbers, while fast-rising Hip Hop singer, Wiz Kid, also lost his car to robbers in Lagos recently.

In a reaction to the robbery incidents in the state, residents of Lagos State have therefore tasked Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola to rise to the occasion as he has always done.

A resident who simply identified himself as Satani expressed his worry over the recent spate of robbery in the state in six words: “Is crime returning to Lagos? Fashola”

Similarly, another resident, ‘Lady T’ reaffirmed her observation that robbery was becoming too rampant in the state.
Meanwhile,
users of the popular mobile device better referred to as the ‘Blackberry have taken the bull by the horn in a bid to stem the tide of armed robbery in the country.

In the early hours of May 25, 2011, a good number of Blackberry users repeatedly sent broadcast messages to fellow users of the device; alerting them of the snatching of two cars at gun point at different parts of Lagos.

The first was a blue-coloured Toyota Corolla with registration number: ‘DZ218LSD’ was reportedly snatched at gun point by armed robbers under the popular Ojota pedestrian bridge situated along Ikorodu Road in Lagos. The car was said to belong to a certain Sofiat Bose Akinbami and had chassis number ‘2TIBR12E42C570945.

The second incident was the loss of a black-coloured Honda car (End of Discussion) with registration number: ‘CX787APP.’ The car was said to have been snatched around 7pm on Monday (May 23, 2011) night along Mangoro/Cement in Agege, Lagos.

As the broadcast of the robbery incidents continued to circulate, users of the mobile device appealed to fellow users to continue to re-broadcast the message until the culprits get apprehended.

Biodun Adeyinka, a Lagos-based user of the Blackberry device wrote, “The Toyota Corolla was snatched this morning at gun point at Ojota. Please broadcast this message so the culprits can be apprehended on time. Please assist with all your effort.”

Similar messages and appeals were made by a cross section of users of the device and the message of fighting crime resonated through the various appeals made.
