Has Genevieve Nnaji recovered?
By Samod Biobaku
More than a few people would recall how star actress, Genevieve Nnaji came under heavy attack for misleading members of the public as regard the certainty of late veteran actor, Sam Loco Efe’s demise.
It been over two weeks now and those who witnessed the onslaught have wondered if the actress has truly recovered from finding herself at the wrong end of media attention; a situation which had degenerated to an extent where she was openly labeled a ‘half-baked illiterate.
The drama began when Nnaji logged into her account on the popular social networking site, ‘Twitter’ to announce the death of the late actor. She clearly stated that she had come on Twitter to let all know that Efe was dead as well as commiserate with the family and fans of the deceased.
Her pronouncement had hardly suck in when she resurfaced and apologized for her earlier pronouncement as she had been ‘reliably’ informed that the actor had only collapsed and not died. She went on the lay claim to fact that she had spoken with the family members of the late actor whom she said confirmed that he was hospitalized and not dead.
She was openly apologetic and blamed the media she had earlier gotten her news from. In a flash, many joined her in faulting and deriding the Nigerian news channel involved while many others sympatised with her.
Few hours after her outburst, Sam loco was confirmed dead and Genevieve apparently tried to wriggle her way out of the embarrassing situation by going comical and admitting that she had created a lot of drama. On this note, she apologized and vowed such wouldn’t repeat itself.
Unfortunately for her, it was already too late to apologise and more than a few of those who had seen her earlier ‘tweets’ considered her remarks a blatant insult to the media that had initially announced the actor’s death.
Before you could say ‘Jack Robinson,’ publishers and Blackberry users lashed out at the actress for daring to question the credibility of the Nigerian media.
Some of the Blackberry broadcast read thus:
“When we broke the news of the demise of Sam Loco, we were called all sorts of names for spreading false rumour by Genevieve".
“…But a local news channel just announced his death as well. Journalism is crap in
“… I wanted to unleash the second dragon, but when I read the BB response from two of my best friends, I decided simmer…ALIBABA..CKN. You are doing a great job, please activate the spell check on your phone… JULIUS AGWU..CKN correct your spelling from ILLITERTATE to ILLITERATE before Genevieve Nnaji calls you an illiterate, too…. Case closed. Have a nice laffing day…CKN.
Without mincing words, for Genevieve, it was a clear case of biting more than one could chew.
