Does this mean no
rapper is better than Mode 9?
For five consecutive years, award-winning rapper, Mode 9 has
won an award at the Headies (formerly christened the Hip Hop World Awards).
This might not be news but the fact that for five
consecutive years, he has won the same award, ‘Lyricist on the Roll’ has become
a major source of concern for music fans and industry players.
As the nominees in the ‘Lyricist on the Roll’ category
at the 2011 edition of the Headies were mentioned, many held their breaths
hoping that perhaps the rap Lord would finally be dethroned at this year’s
edition but Alas! This was not to be. The nominees for this year included M.I
(with Undisputed), Ice Prince (with Oleku), Vector (with Get Down) and Terry
tha Rapman (with Boyz are Not Smiling) yet Mode 9 mounted the stage for the
fifth time in a row to claim the Headie. The question on the lips of some guest
went thus: “Is this his birthright? Does this mean that for five years, no one
has outshined or dwarfed Mode 9 in this category?” Well, your guess is as good
as mine.
