Who (wickedly) paired
Toni Payne and Funke Kuti?
There was a note a mischief and wicked monkey business in
the paring of Toni Payne and Funke Kuti at the 2011 edition of The Headies.
Both women are celebrities but their celebrity status also
carries a tag of ‘troubled women’ as a guest recklessly coined it.
The more I looked at both women, the more they looked like a
Charles Taylor and a Saddam Hussein (both charged with war crimes), a human
cannibal and a King Cobra (both feed on their kind), a Tafa Balogun and a Bode
George (both have done jail time), an owl and mosquitoes (both brutally active
in the dark), a chain smoker and a drunk (both addicted) and an M.K.O and a
Dele Giwa (both victims of political power play). The comparison could go on
but the fact remains that the pairing of a Toni Payne and Funke Kuti had
fingerprints of mischief, mockery and a deliberate agenda all over it.
Once again, I ask – who did the pairing and how can such a
person justify the pairing of two celebrity women with matrimonial cataclysm at
the centre of their intimate history? How?
As if this was not bad enough, both women decided to
crack jokes and while Funke Kuti performed averagely by asking rhetorical
questions centred on the theme and title of recent Nigerian contemporary songs,
Toni Payne hit Funke Kuti below the belt when she decided to join Kuti but of
all the songs she could have mentioned, why mention ‘Bang Bang Bang’ – A song
made popular by Kuti’s estranged husband and father of her child, Femi Kuti. If
it was a joke, we consider it expensive and if it wasn’t, then it was
unguardedly reckless for a woman who is supposed to be a mother and role model
to others.
