Following unconfirmed reports that surfaced on November 29, 2011 about popular Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson being mysteriously struck by blindness, the truth has finally emerged as the image of the actress looking blind was a shot taken on the location of a new movie directed by Michael Jaja.

To buttress the facts, a similar image of another Nollywood diva, Rita Dominic also appeared online with the actress carrying a facial make up on the location of a new movie titled ‘The Meeting.’

Before now, a certain soft sell magazine had erroneously published a story with the headline ‘Mercy Johnson goes blind’ and this had thrown the Nigerian entertainment industry into a momentary state of panic and worry over the actress’ condition.

In a swift reaction to the rumour, Mercy Johnson has quelled rumours of her alleged blindness.

The actress’ publicist, Bigsam Media has described the reports as nothing but blatant falsehood.

A statement made available to Simply Samad, Mercy Johnson read, “As at the time of writing this, blogspheres and entertainment industry is awash with rumour that star actress, Mercy Johnson suffered blindness and experienced a terrible accident that led to her death.”

Mercy Johnson’s publicist made it clear that “this rumour has no semblance or iota of truth. Mercy is on a movie location in Lagos and getting set for her trip to Australia in a matter of days. After diligent investigation, we discovered that the rumour started as a result of a publicity stunt initiated by the producer of a movie where Mercy’s character in the flick lost an eye. Another part of the rumour was started by detractors whose only goal is to pull Mercy Johnson down by all means.”

Still on the matter, her publicist added that it was “despicable to note that these rumours were strengthened by writers who did not cross-check before posting on their blogs, platforms or newspapers. We decry this act of insensitivity and irresponsibility especially as it affects family, friends and fans.”

Acknowledging the calls put through from family and friends, her publicist assured them that the actress remains hale and hearty.

“We implore bloggers and writers to please cross-check reports on Mercy with us to avoid using their platforms to promote falsehood and abate inappropriate ‘PR stunts’ by those who want to sell their movies or those whose goal is to pull others down at all cost.”
