D’banj, Shame on You!
By Samod Biobaku
Memories of how Nigeria’s music
ambassador, D’banj sang praises of President Goodluck Jonathan during his
political campaign still remain fresh in our hearts.
How can we forget that for his role
in Jonathan’s campaign, D’banj and his Mo’Hits crew were rewarded with millions
of Naira and perhaps much more than was revealed?
This was when millions of Nigerians
including D’banj saw Jonathan as Nigeria’s Moses who had come to
take Nigerians out of bondage and lead the nation towards the Biblical Promised
Land.
Well, that was then. Today,
Jonathan has shown his true colours to all who care to see and it is not a
colour majority of Nigerians are fond of.
How does Mr. President justify the
death of a young Nigerian on the streets of Ilroin in what was supposed to be a
peaceful protest to his removal of oil subsidy.
On January 3, 2011, residents of Lagos State
took to the streets in protest of President Jonathan’s removal of oil subsidy.
A good number of Nigerians were
impressed by the fact that the likes of Afro Beat prodigy, Seun Kuti (son of
late Fela Anikulapo Kuti), Banky W and many others could shed their highly
coveted robe of stardom; leave their comfort zone; all in a bid to fight the removal
of oil subsidy.
However, Jonathan’s music
ambassadors like D’banj, Ramsey Nuoah, Kanayo O Kanayo, Iyabo Ojo, Francis Duru
and host of others did not share the enthusiasm of others to join the protest.
Perhaps, we should remind D’banj
about the fate of Afro Juju maestro, Sir Shina Peters (SSP) and his ‘Abacha for
President’ rally. He was never the same afterwards.
This should perhaps serve as a
lesson to Nigerian artistes, actors and celebrities whose myopic appetite for
wealth often renders them blind to the true nature of man especially those in
the murky waters of politics.
Once again, D’banj – Shame on you!
As for Don Jazzy, we’ll be back for
you…
n dats WORD!
