Suspected armed robbers escape from court *after beating prosecutor into a coma*
Is Nigeria simply
going from bad to worse or am I the one over-reacting?
Can anyone please
explain to me how suspected armed robbers managed to pounce on a prosecutor
while they were being arraigned in court, beat him into a stupor and then
incredulously went ahead to escape from the court in the prosecutor’s car?
Perhaps, I should
share details of the story.
Here:
FIVE suspected
robbers, on Tuesday, escaped from the police while being arraigned before
Magistrate Court 6, Minna, the Niger State capital, after attacking the police
prosecutor attached to the court.
The suspected armed
robbers were alleged to have been taken to court in the early hours of the day
by prison officers, who allegedly abandoned them to the police prosecutor after
which they launched the attack in the bid to evade prosecution.
Nigerian Tribune
investigations further revealed that the robbery suspects were said to have
descended on the prosecutor, said to be an inspector, inflicting serious
injuries on him and rendering him unconscious, snatched his car key and escaped from the scene in his car.
It was further
learnt that the police prosecutor was rushed to an undisclosed hospital in
Minna by some concerned members of the public and other sympathisers who came
around only after the robbers had escaped from the court premises in a
commando-like manner.
Further checks
revealed that litigants were also said to have run for dear life, while the
robbers’ attack on the police prosecutor
lasted.
When contacted, the
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Niger State police command, ASP Richard
Oguche confirmed the incident, insisting that it was negligence on the part of
the prison warders who allegedly abandoned the accused at the court.
In an interview
with the Nigerian Tribune, Oguche said “we have the report that about five
robbery suspects attacked our prosecutor and escaped while they were in court.
This was after beating the prosecutor into coma; they removed his car key and
drove away the car to escape,” he said.
He stressed that
the command had intensified efforts by spreading its dragnet to re-arrest the
fleeing robbery suspects and bring them to book, adding that all officers and
men of the command had been alerted to the incident with a view to pinning down
the fleeing hoodlums.
The story was culled from NIGERIAN TRIBUNE
