What is the way forward with Nigerian movies?

Hi all, i recently received some comments on one of my stories, KNUCKLE - where a number of readers urged me to consider a career path in script writing. As interesting as this sounds, i had my reservations and after thinking about a couple of things, i decided to share and ask a very integral question. Kindly let me know what you think after reading this?

"Thanks a lot for the inspiring lines but here's one thing i'd like your view on. If from this point on, we begin to see a whole lot of changes in the kind of scripts and story lines our directors and producers are given to work on, do you honestly think we have the technology, graphics, sound and visual effects and much more to follow through. Picture a movie like Marvel's Green Lantern. A story like that would make a wonderful read in the mind and hands of a good writer but could Nigerian possibly shoot a Green lantern as things stand now. I still see a lot of crappy production in the movie arena today and this worries me to a very large extent. While a Final Destination (movie) would make a great story to read, can the Nigerian movie industry pull through with the task of shooting a film like that? My answer to this is nowhere near the corridors of a yes and again, this bothers me. How do we break into the international standard of shooting movies expecially where special effects and very creative graphical genius is required. What is the way forward?"

Kindly drop a comment and share your thoughts.

  1. Well being a film maker and a American film maker I can answer this for you some what. First big budget films like the Avengers have a large following from comic book lovers. Does Nigeria have a large comic book fan base. I have watched a lot of Nigerian films and the issue are the story lines are all over the place and hard to follow. They need stronger scripts and well written scripts. Sam your story is very detailed and well written that is why they say make it a movie. People have to realize script for a full feature movies consist of at least 110 pages of nothing but dialog. So it takes your story to a whole other direction cause your characters have to have dialog and more dialog. For a more international appeal Naija needs to have some of their actors really perfect their craft. They yell instead of talk in the films too much. And if you really want to do big budget films NollyWood makes enough money and they need to come together and build a motion picture studio get Tyler Perry people come and help build a major production Studios and it will up the quality of production and get good solid scripts. Who saw the film Viva Riva shot by a brother in the Congo he won so many international awards and it was in French . I did not mind the sub titles but the quality and story had some substance and it was easy to follow. So it can be done it going to take some unity and thinking outside of the box. just my opinion from the outside looking in.
