While visiting India's poorest areas, the Duke of York snubbed a free accommodation at the High commission and opted for this...
Earlier, the Mail revealed how Andrew had hired a private jet for this six-day tour of India to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The cost of the plane? An estimated £80,000.
And once there, instead of staying - as Royals normally do - at the home of the Indian High Commissioner, he ran up a bill for a further £3,000 on a three-night stay at a five-star hotel.
The PR damage was compounded when his ex-wife, Sarah, Duchess of York, tweeted with toe-curling enthusiasm that ‘the Duke has been a hit in India . . . Great Britain should know of his commitment and hard work to this country!’
The revelations about Andrew’s extravagance led to him being accused of ‘extraordinary crassness’ by Labour MP Paul Flynn, who described the trip as a ‘scandalous waste of money’.
‘How long will Prince Andrew be allowed to go on embarrassing the country at taxpayers’ expense?’ he demanded.
However, my investigations suggest the revelations were merely the tip of the iceberg, and Andrew enjoyed a lot more of the most lavish hospitality India had to offer throughout his week-long stay.
He started as he meant to go on by arriving in Delhi on April 28 on a first-class British Airways flight, costing around £7,000. In a concession to economy, his five-strong entourage (including two bodyguards) travelled business class.
According to fellow passengers, Andrew whiled away the journey playing card games on his iPad.
