A Closer Look at the 2012 Range Rover Evoque eD4

The 2012 Range Rover Evoque eD4 is a compact SUV that won’t disappoint drivers looking for an environmentally-safe vehicle that can also boast impressive fuel economy statistics.  And when we say impressive, we’re talking about a Range Rover that is supposedly capable of almost 60 miles per gallon.  As it reads explicitly on its bootlid, this Evoque can go 57.6 miles per gallon, and reviewers attribute this extremely low fuel consumption figure to the change in the guard.

The original Evoque was a four-wheel-drive vehicle; this has been changed for the eD4, which now runs on front-wheel drive.  This also makes it a first among Range Rovers, the first-ever FWD of its kind.  And not only that, it is also the first Range Rover to come with a manual transmission in over ten years.

Another good thing about this vehicle is its pricing.  The 2012 Range Rover Evoque eD4 is the most affordable member of the Evoque family; it costs just a shade over $50,000 in US currency.  And that’s already considering the plethora of useful features, such as the rear parking sensors and Bluetooth-enabled car phone.  And those are just the most basic – other add-ons can cost you upwards of $15,000.  Some reviewers, however, panned the lack of some essential features (satellite navigation, ambient lighting, sunroof, etc.) as opposed to features that wouldn’t do much good for the average SUV owner.

In terms of powertrains, don’t expect anything of the muscular variety.  That applies, at least, to the base engine, a 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine with 148 horsepower.  The mid-range engine has the same displacement and cylinder setup, albeit with 187 horsepower.   Both of these engines are turbodiesels.  The high-end version, a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, is capable of 237 horsepower.  It is not a Range Rover Sport, and you shouldn’t expect it to be – it won’t set any records on the zero to 60 or quarter-mile.  The 2012 Range Rover Evoque eD4 is an economy-oriented SUV, and if that matters to you as a sports utility vehicle buyer, the eD4 would appeal to you.
