Heroes And Zeros [MOVIE REVIEW + Official Trailer]

Earlier today, i was invited to the official screening of the movie, 'Heroes and Zeroes;' a Nigerian movie featuring Ghana's Nadia Buari and other prominent actors. Enjoy the review i just wrapped up:

The movie, ‘Heroes and Zeros’ scores high on a number of creative pages but on the note of originality and conversational ingenuity, it’s proximity to reality and the performance of the cast ranks higher than any other element on which this assessment or theatrical permutation might be based.

Of course, it’s a Nigerian movie, which tells a Nigerian story that millions of movie lovers have become bored with but still watch anyway. The story takes a step off the roadmap constructed by movie makers whose love for clichés paint Nigerian majority of movies in bright and blinding colours of predictability.

Away from tales of witchcraft, ritual killings, annoyingly comical scripts (with actors who have been boxed into the agonising seat of becoming typecasts) and the regular Nollywood scripts, ‘Heroes and Zeroes’ makes an critical incursion into having one movie running off into multiple thematic streams.

From one perspective, the movie tells the story of the obsession of Tonia (Nadia Buari) by Amos Fele (Bimbo Manuel). Ten years ago, Amos Fele was a wealthy celebrity director in the Nigerian film industry. Now, he lives in a ramshackle flat, doing occasional low-paying TV commercials for nameless products.

His joyless marriage to Tinuke (Tina Mba) a junior bank worker, is fast crumbling, especially after the death of their only child.

However, his sudden stroke of luck and return to prominence coincides with that of Dibu Ijele (Gabriel Afolayan) a reporter with Naija Scene, a weekly tabloid whose love and passion for journalism takes him into dirty deals and high risk stories and scoops.

It is however interesting to note that from another dimension, ‘Heroes and Zeros’ takes a direct hit at the decay and ugly truths in two of Nigeria’s core industries, the Nigerian media and the Nigerian movie industry – Some of which have remained too dirty to be told before now.

‘Heroes and Zeros’ does not pull an ‘Expendables’ stunt by casting strictly the A-list. Rather, a blend is sought and gifts the movie with Ghana’s Nadia Buari, Bimbo Manuel, Nobert Young, Gabriel Afolayan, Akin Lewis, Olu Jacobs, Tina Mba, Abiodun Ejelenu and a host of other talented actors.

Heroes & Zeros is a movie written and directed by Niji Akanni. It was produced by Koga Studios, and has been scheduled to be released in cinemas across Nigeria on September 7, 2012.

On a technical end of the table, the audio and visual production surely isn’t on the same pedestal with high budget flicks like Ije and others in that mould but as I always say, a movie is either good or bad. I’ve never been one to take prisoners and I’m not about to start now.

Also, one of the surest ways to know a good movie is to ask yourself two integral questions – Firstly, would you want to see it again and how soon? Secondly, would you genuinely recommend it to a strong critic of the Nigerian movie industry?
