Suspected Robber Dies in Gun Battle With Police

A few weeks ago, an unidentified robber was killed during a failed operation in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.
At about 10.30 pm on Aug. 8, four suspected armed robbers had barricaded the road at Ishara with a red Honda car and had begun robbing motorists. However, a distress call alerted the Ago-Iwoye Police Division and an anti-robbery team led by the Divisional Police Officer was promptly dispatched to the scene.

The Ogun State Police Commissioner Mr. Okoye Ikemefuna, who confirmed the incident, said, “On sighting the approaching police team, the robbers ran back to their vehicle and tried to escape. In a bid to facilitate a hasty retreat, they exchanged gunfire with the police. The driver of the robbers’ get-away vehicle was shot dead, while the others escaped into the bush with bullet wounds.

“Two locally-made pistols, one Baretta pistol, two cell-phones, several wraps of Indian hemp and 14 live ammunition were recovered from the vehicle abandoned by the robbers. No suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident.”

In a separate incident, an employee of the Tai Solarin College of Education, Omu, Ijebu, Mr. Jasiliu Kadiri, was robbed in his home at Atan. The robbers, numbering about four, gained entrance into the compound via a ladder that was placed against the wall for the purpose. The barbed wire fence was then pulled up to enable the robbers jump over the fence unhurt.

After successfully robbing Kadiri of his Nissan Pathfinder with Registration No MUS 225 AR and other valuables, the robbers were accosted on their way back to their hideout by a police patrol from the Aton Division. Upon sighting the patrol team, the robbers reportedly changed course and turned back. In the process, they had an accident with the stolen SUV, which they immediately abandoned on the spot and escaped in their own vehicle, a Toyota Camry.

“Some weapons were recovered from the abandoned SUV. They included two cutlasses, one live ammunition, two locally-made pistols and four cellphones, none of which belonged to Kadiri. The suspects are still currently at large,” Ikemefuna said.
