When Sex goes wrong!

Moji couldn’t stop shedding tears… The more she thought about it, the hotter the stream of hot tears that painfully coursed down her face as she sat by the edge of her bed.

She was 22 years old, had graduated from one of Nigeria’s most prestigious universities barely a year ago and already had a very good job with a telecommunication firm in Lagos. This would be considered a dream situation by most girls and of course, she agreed with this but there was a problem.

“How did I get myself into this,” she asked herself without expecting an answer as she was alone.

She raised her eyes, glanced at the ceiling and said: “Everything is going to be alright,” even when she knew this was not going to happen if what the doctor had told her a while ago was the gospel truth.

She had just returned home from the hospital and she should have known something was wrong from the moment the doctor had asked her to come and see him:

“Can you stop by at the hospital,” Dr. Olu had asked her via a telephone call and she had agreed.

When Dr. Olu had told her she was pregnant, she was excited and her face had lit up in exhilaration. She had looked straight at him and said: “Really? Oh God! That’s amazing. I’ve got to tell Jide tonight…”

She was on the verge of calling her boyfriend, Jide to know precisely when he would be coming around to pick her when the doctor’s voice stopped her.

“Miss Moji, I have some bad news and it’s imperative that I tell you right away…,” Dr. olu said.

A little frown formed across her forehead and the next words just came tumbling out of her mouth: “What’s wrong with the baby? Is it something…” she had asked but the doctor didn’t let her finish. “Miss Moji, emmmm there’s no other way to tell you this – You’re HIV positive!”

As she sat by the edge of the bed, she remembered a seminar that she had attended a few months back while she was at the Orientation camp of the one-year National Youth Service Scheme in Ogun State; organised by the Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND).

She remembered how she had smirked at the guest speakers when they had spoken endlessly about the need for women and young ladies to understand the importance of contraceptive pills and other means of protecting the female sexual health.

She had laughed hard at her friend, Aishat who kept taking notes and asking questions during the seminar. Aishat had asked a total of eight questions and Moji was almost tempted to slap her when she had kept speaking to her about it even after the seminar had ended.

At the moment, Moji just sat there and recalled how Aishat had called her to inform her that her boyfriend, Tosin had proposed marriage to her three days ago. She had been genuinely happy for her and was more than certain that Jide was on the verge of doing the same given the things he had been speaking to her about lately.

“There has to be a mistake somewhere,” Moji said to herself.

She picked up her car key and drove to a diagnostic clinic three streets away. She was convinced that the doctor must have made a mistake with the tests. Of course she was not a believer in the use of female condoms or any form of protection for that matter and this explained the unprotected sex she had always had with Jide since the very first time they had sex.

The story of Moji above paints a picture of millions of young ladies out there today who pay little or no attention to their sexual health.

Of course, abstinence remains the safest option and a lot of emphasis is placed on sexual abstinence because it remains the only real guarantee against STDs and unplanned pregnancy.

If however, you must sex, always use a condom especially now that female condoms are available.

Be aware that condoms don't provide complete protection against STDs but, they do decrease your chances of getting an STD.

Know also that other methods of birth control, like birth control pills, shots, implants, or diaphragms don't protect you from STDs. If you use one of these methods, be sure to also use a condom every time you have sex.

You must also limit your number of sexual partners as your risk of getting an STD increases with the number of partners you have.

For those wondering what eventually happened to Moji, well, she was confirmed HIV positive (again) at the diagnostic clinic.

Aishat on the other hand is happily married today with a son and is carrying her husband’s second baby.
