Is D'banj Dumb or Smart For Saying This? [50 CENT AS A CASE STUDY]

Nigeria's A-list artiste, D'banj recently granted an interview to Beat FM in Lagos and towards the end of the interview, he was asked about his lack of enthusiasm for the social media and his reply came thus:

“I am too busy for social media, please. If you people want to talk to me go to TV or radio I don’t go to social media except I have something to say. I never give out recharge cards on Twitter (laughs) even when I was with Globacom I never did that. If you want to do that why not help a charity instead.”

I would personally love to ask a question here and for this question, i would use American rap star, 50 Cent as a reference point - Is D'banj as rich or as famous as 50 Cent? Well, the last time i checked, 50 Cent clearly stood out as one of the richest artistes in his generation and i stand to be corrected.

Still on the matter, if 50 Cent (born Curtis Jackson), as rich as he is, can still find time from his busy schedule to attend to his over 8 million followers (precisely 8, 029, 846 followers), then D'banj might need to reassess his affinity with the social media.

As at April 2012, 50 Cent was rated Forbes' 5th Wealthiest Artiste for 2012 with $110 million. The Queens-born rapper earned $100 million on the sale of his Vitaminwater stake in 2007—and tens of millions more from touring, record sales and clothing—but spent freely on cars and renovations to his mansion, formerly owned by Mike Tyson. Even so, a nice cushion remains from his back catalog, acting gigs and 50 Cent-themed videogames, shoes and books, as well as his new headphone line SMS.

Meanwhile, in addition to his apparent disaffection for the social media space, the singer, who revealed that his mother allowed him to travel to the UK in 2002 with a condition that he would spend just two months there, describes social media network as platform for idle talk.

Again i ask, should we consider D'banj a smart artiste or one who skips between the ranks of being confused/dumb?

  2. GistFactory, I do share you opinion on the social media space being effectively used. The earlier our Dear D'banj realises this, the better.
