Dortmund’s Sven Bender Bled on so Many Shirts that He Had to Wear One From the Club Shop
Sven Bender's nose was broken during Borussia Dortmund's 3-1 win over Napoli. This turned on the blood spigot inside and it refused to quit. With three fourths of Dortmund's backline (Mats Hummels, Neven Subotic and Marcel Schmelzer) out with injuries of their own, Bender was already filling in as an emergency defender and didn't have the luxury of calling it a night early to tend to his painful and leaky sniffer.
Since footballers are prohibited from playing with blood on their kit, every time the plugs in Bender's nose popped out and let the blood dribble free, he had to change his shirt. After three shirt changes, the club's kitman ran out to the Westfalenstadion club shop for one more so Sven could finish out the match.
Manager Jurgen Klopp explained after the match (via Reuters):
"It was important that he (Bender) stayed on because of his performance," he said. "It was a great game for him and we had to change his bloodied shirt several times. The last one we got from the club shop."
Bender played the full 90 minutes and might have to wear a protective mask for a while. If you can't find a Bender shirt in Dortmund's club shop, you'll know why.
