Senate to Approve 7-Year Jail Term for Bloggers, Social Media Critics

A Bill before the Senate, seeking to convict social media critics in Nigeria, has passed a second reading on its floor.

The said Bill, when passed into law, will ensure that any social media critic found guilty will spend seven years in jail.

The Senate has already reached an advanced stage to passing the Bill into law.

The Bill is to minimise some inciting criticisms against the government of Nigeria and its leaders, especially President Goodluck Jonathan, who has been constantly bashed by Nigerians on social media platforms.

The Bill is also proposing a stiffer punishment for internet fraudsters and scammers in Nigeria.
