'Avengers: Age of Ultron' first look and new details on title villain

Avengers, re-assemble! The latest cover of Entertainment Weekly features the stars of the upcoming superhero sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron, including a first look at the title villain and eight new photos.

Among the intriguing details we learn about Marvel’s baddie: In order to give the Avengers a much-needed break, billionaire playboy-inventor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) has created an army of Earth-protecting drones controlled by a powerful program that takes the form of a metallic being called Ultron (voiced by James Spader).

Ultron has also been designed to be self-learning and self-aware, which is bad news for us frail and fallible humans. (Did Tony Stark not watch T2?) “Ultron sees the big picture and he goes, ‘Okay, we need radical change, which will be violent and appalling, in order to make everything better,” writer-director Joss Whedon tells EW. What makes this advanced being even more dangerous is its ability to re-program itself into bigger and more powerful forms.

Among the new players in the saga are the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), the speedster Quicksilver (last seen in X-Men: Days of Future Past, and played here by Aaron Taylor-Johnson), and a synthetic humanoid called the Vision (Paul Bettany). Whedon is re-imagining comic-book history: In traditional Marvel lore, it’s inventor Hank Pym — aka. Ant-Man — who creates Ultron; the robot in turn fabricates the Vision to battle Pym.

Can the Avengers put aside their long-simmering differences to defeat Earth’s newest threat? We’ll find out when Age of Ultron hits theaters on May 1, 2015.
