New 'Foxcatcher' Teaser Trailer Keeps the focus on Channing Tatum

Sony Classics (or maybe it’s big Sony behind the scenes) is getting interestingly Tatum-centric with its “Foxcatcher” marketing as of late. First there was the new poster for the film earlier this week, which featured the “22 Jump Street” star front and center, and today a new teaser trailer is quite focused on the heartthrob’s contribution to Bennett Miller’s film.

Maybe this is part of the groundwork for an eventual lead actor push for Tatum. It was Carell who won the lion’s share of applause out of the Cannes Film Festival, but there are early intentions to campaign both for Best Actor in the Oscar race. We’ve spotlighted the company “Foxcatcher” would join if indeed the film were to land two lead nominations, but as that data portrays, it’s an uphill climb and it’s been a long time since the last example. Still, there are some films that seem built for that kind of distinction. And “Foxcatcher” seems like one of them.

Or maybe at the end of the day Carell finds himself in supporting alongside Ruffalo, with a fierce angle on winning the Oscar. I’m told that’s not the plan, but you never know how things will unfold.

And not to read too much into this marketing, mind. Tatum is also the film’s best shot at making money at the box office, and the film is also very much his story. But while trailers and clips have shown that Carell is doing something way against his usual grain in this film, the marketing hasn’t focused on him just yet and I find that interesting.

Synopsis
Mark Schultz, despite having won a gold medal for wrestling at the 1984 Olympics, lives in the shadow of his accomplished older brother, Dave. Mark seems to have found his own path when multimillionaire John E. du Pont invites Mark to to train as part of a national U.S. wrestling team preparing for the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Du Pont's training is relentless and his philosophy strident, but Mark wants to please him nonetheless. But when Dave arrives to much fanfare to join Team Foxcatcher, Mark finds himself relegated to the shadows once again, while DuPont begins to unravel. Based on a true story.
