Sylvester Stallone's on-set injury
Sylvester Stallone may look indestructible, but the action star has taken a beating to get that way. Reflecting on his battered state, the 68-year-old described the nasty fall on the set of Expendables 3 that required a metal plate inserted into his back.
”I usually grade the quality of the film by the intensity of the injury,” the Rocky star joked at a press conference to promote the three-quel on Monday, according to the Daily Mail.
"In this one I ended up really taking a fall on my back and ended up having some metal inserted in there so if I’m squeaky then it’s not my shoes, it’s my back!”
The plate will add to the collection of metal now attached to the star’s frame, joining the one inserted into his neck for a hairline fracture in 2009 while filming the original Expendables.
It might be comforting for Stallone to know, however, that he isn’t the only Expendable who walked away damaged. Co-star Antonio Banderas suffered in silence after hurting himself early in the shoot.
"I got injured in the first take that I did in the movie. I carried the injury all the way through but I didn’t say because I didn’t want anyone to think I was getting older," the 53-year-old Banderas told reporters.
On-set injury has become an unpleasant theme for the blockbuster action franchise: Last year Jason Statham reportedly almost drowned in a mishap while shooting an action sequence. But at least bad injuries can make for good bonding: In 2012, Schwarzenegger posted a photo from his hospital bed next to Stallone.
"After all the action, stunts & physical abuse shooting The Expendables 2 and The Last Stand, it was time for a little tune up on my shoulder,” the Terminator star tweeted. “Look who was coincidentally waiting in line behind me for his shoulder surgery. Now we’re ready for another round of great times and action when we shoot The Tomb.”
And another round of injuries: The two hard bodies then succumbed to identical pulled leg muscles that held up shooting the action movie The Tomb, according to the UK Express.
But it’s all for our entertainment. The sequel to Expendable 2 has expanded its cast, which, along with Stallone and Schwarzenegger, includes Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford, Kellsey Grammer, and Kellan Lutz, among others, and opens August 15.
